“Q” is for Quiet as in “Knowing when to be QUIET”

This post is late and is for Monday April 20, 2015 and part of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge for April 2015!

I have been away for a few days because my mother-in-law of 14 years has been in the hospital since Sunday April 12th due to congestive heart failure and having issues from constant fluid in her lungs. Today was the best day that I have seen her have since she went into the hospital.

I chose QUIET because you see I am a son-in-law of the non-traditional variety. My spouse is my husband and he his Hispanic which means he comes from a very machismo Hispanic background. He is the oldest of eight children – six boys and two girls. His mother will quickly tell you that I treat her better than almost all of her children.

This last weekend Cruz and I were at the hospital with some of his siblings and their spouses and his youngest brother, who is also gay, during an exchange quickly reminded me that I had no business in the room or the conversation because I was not part of the family. My immediate reaction was to stress that yes I was very much a part of the family and have been for 14 years and that I treat his mother better than he ever has in the last 14 years. After that I became QUIET and have only voiced my concerns to my husband when we are away from his siblings.

You have to know which battles to pick which means you have to know WHEN TO BE QUIET!!! Until next time, that’s “What’s Rattling My Cage!!!”
